GETTING AROUND

Getting Here & There

By Plane

Ixtapa–Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH) is the closest airport to the Troncones-Majahua-Saladita area, and serves as the primary entry point for travelers heading to the region. Located to the south of Zihuatanejo, travel from the airport by car or taxi takes about 35 to 45 minutes; it’s about 40 kilometers away.

By Taxi or Rental Car

Taxis fares to the area range from 800 to 1200 MXN (pesos), depending on your destination. There is an official taxi stand within the airport, with drivers waiting outside. If you’re staying in a hotel or private home, it’s recommended to make arrangements with your hosts. Most have drivers or companies they use or will recommend.

Rental cars are available at the airport from reputable brands such as Hertz, Thrifty, Alamo, Fox and EuropCar. There are local rental companies outside the airport, one of the most popular and reliable being Jonny Cash. To rent a car, you'll need a valid driver's license and a valid passport, a credit card in the driver's name, and a driver who is at least 25 years old. Mexican Personal Liability Insurance is mandatory, and may or may not be included in the rental quote. Ask before booking.

Rental cars provide the most freedom for travelers, particularly for surfers who want to be able to go where to the waves are breaking best. The highway to the Troncones area–Federal Highway 200 (Carretera Federal 200 or Carretera Pacífico)–is kept in good condition, although it’s poorly lit at night.  Driving on highways at night can also be precarious due to wildlife, pedestrians and the free-wheeling habits of Mexican drivers; passing slower cars up a hill and around a corner is commonplace.

Driving in Troncones, Majahua and Saladita is done at a slower pace, but still has its challenges, the most notable being pot holes, puddles, dust and topes (speed bumps). The latter are somewhat frequent, often unmarked and always a jolt.

There are gas stations just outside of Troncones and Saladita but none in either town.

Driver safety tips

Keep your car gassed up; start looking for gas once you’re at a half-tank. The gas stations aren’t always open when you want them.

Pick a low-profile vehicle; luxury SUVs, high-end trucks and fancy cars attract attention you don’t want. Although crime here is rare, car-jackings, shakedowns and kidnapping always seem to involve drugs and the more expensive auto brands.

Avoid driving on highways at night due to hish-risk conditions such as poor lighting, unexpected wildlife, intermittent cell service and more.

Hire local professional taxi drivers; get to know them.
