Staying connected

‍

Most house rentals, hotels and restaurants offer Wi-Fi.

‍

The two main providers are Megacable (fiber optic/cable) which is common in hotels, homes, restaurants and businesses, and Starlink (satellite-based), which is now increasingly popular, especially in the more remote areas.

‍

Both of those connections are generally reliable but during heavy storms the electrical grid can take a hit. Outages happen, so don’t be surprised if the Wi-Fi flickers or power goes out briefly.

You’ll hear the letters CFE; that’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad, the Federal Electricity Commission, the state-owned electric utility of Mexico. CFE gets a lot of blame and not enough respect. You’ll see their trucks almost every day.

‍

LTE (4G) service is steady and strong in Troncones, but non-existent along Manzanillo Bay and in Majahua. It’s spotty in Saladita.

‍

‍Cell Service

Telcel and AT&T are the most common carriers in Mexico. Coverage in Troncones is decent, but can be hard to come by in certain neighborhoods or at the beach. Phone calls go through regularly and easiest using Wi-Fi.

‍

Many travelers rely on LTE service, local Wi-Fi or prepaid SIM cards for data.

‍

‍

WhatsApp is the Way

Nearly everyone here uses WhatsApp as their main form of communication. For messaging or calling. “Everyone” includes taxi drivers, restaurants, surf shops, town officials, the chicken man and the fruit truck. It’s the fastest and simplest way to make reservations, order food, ask about availability and to stay in touch. Many businesses post their WhatsApp numbers on their signs or menus.

‍

‍

Working Remotely

Homes, restaurants and hotels all have solid connections, and many people do work remotely here. Just know that it's not foolproof–electricity fluctuations and weather can affect connections.

‍

There is a dedicated community work area at Hacienda in Saladita–complete with high speed internet, printing services, air conditioning and several private conference rooms.
