WEATHER PREPAREDNESS

How’s the Weather?

From November through May expect warm temperatures, dry conditions, blue skies and plenty of sunshine. From June through October expect intense heat, high humidity, changeable skies, occasional rain and plenty of sunshine. The mid-day sun is aggressive year-round–use sunscreen and hats; stay covered up and hydrated.

Rainy Season

From mid-June through mid-October, expect late afternoon or overnight rains. Sometimes those are heavy but they’re usually short-lived. Still, they make getting around harder. Paved roads flood; dirt roads get muddy. Power outages happen occasionally during the bigger storms; keep a flashlight handy. Be patient.

Hurricanes & Tropical Storms

The Pacific coast of Mexico has a June-through-October hurricane season. A few storms come ashore each year, mostly frequently between August and October. Direct hits to the Costa Grande area (from Zihuatanejo to Lazaro Cardenas) are rare, but heavy rain and strong winds do roll through on occasion. If a storm is coming, track local updates on apps such as Windy, Weather Underground and The Weather Channel. Be sure to stock up on water and essentials and to take precautions with pets, cars, bikes, surfboards, electronics and outdoor furniture. Hotels and house rentals will usually guide you through such conditions.

The Sun

Troncones enjoys year-round sun, almost daily. There are very few cloudy days, maybe five each year. The sun is powerful, tropical and insanely hot. Don’t underestimate its strength wherever you are, especially when you are in or near the ocean.

Wherever you are between 11 am and 4 pm, it’s good to find shade as often as you can. The sun really is that strong here. Even on cloudy days, you can burn quickly.
