BIKING

Getting around Troncones, Majahua and Saladita is pretty easy on a bike. Along the coast the terrain is somewhat flat and most of the villages are paved. Drivers are respectful and topes (speed bumps) keep them paying attention. The biggest obstacles, besides the heat, are small thorns and sharp rocks, but those are typically only found if you go off-road, onto the trails and into the arroyos.

Worn cruiser bikes are easy to come by. It’s likely your host will know where to find those and can have them brought to your house or hotel. Some places already have their own fleet of bikes. Ask. Mountain bikes and high-performance bikes can be found locally, too, but give your host time to arrange for those.

A ride from downtown Troncones to downtown Saladita is about a 50-minute trip if you use the back way, through Majahua and La Pequeña, across the lagoon and on past La Boca. It’s about 11 kilometers or almost 7 miles.

The dirt roads beyond Majahua are typically hazard-free and make for good exploring. You may come across a dog or two, maybe; pigs, goats and cows are more common. Climbing the mountain behind Majahua will take you to a different time and place. Stay hydrated. There are stretches after Majahua with no stores, no places to get water.

Ixtapa has a wide, paved bike route, connecting Playa Linda in the north to Zihuatanejo in the south. Because of the sun, it’s best explored in the early morning or late afternoon. There’s a section near the northern end of Ixtapa where you can stop to admire huge crocodiles (safely) from a bridge.
